Christmas cooking classes in Singapore: make this year's feast your own

Christmas cooking classes in Singapore, in brief:

  • Palate Sensations is running a series of festive Christmas classes this season, each with a different menu — Traditional, White, Tropical and Vegan Christmas are all on the line-up.
  • The festive classes are long, relaxed sessions of around four hours, taught by our chef instructors at the Biopolis studio.
  • The Traditional Christmas class is "traditional with a twist", with flank steak, red cabbage and pecan cupcakes on the menu.
  • The Vegan Christmas class cooks a creamy mushroom soup, a lentil stuffed pumpkin and a chocolate log cake.
  • Hands-on classes need a minimum of four participants, and bookings close 48 hours before the class.
  • If a class doesn't reach its minimum, you can choose a refund or a replacement class.
  • Dates are added as the season fills, so the live class listing is the best place to see what's open.

Picture the moment the oven door opens on Christmas Day. Everyone drifts towards the kitchen, someone says "that smells incredible", and for one second the cook — that's you, in this picture — feels about ten feet tall.

Now picture the other version. The same cook, three hours earlier, staring at a roast and a recipe, quietly wondering whether they've bitten off more than they can chew. We've all been in that second kitchen. It's not a good place to be at Christmas.

That's the gap a festive cooking class is meant to close. You walk in with a few doubts and walk out with a menu you've actually cooked, tasted and understood. Here's what's on offer at Palate Sensations this Christmas, and how to choose the one that suits your table.

Why take a Christmas cooking class in Singapore?

Because a festive meal is one of the few times of year when everyone expects the cook to deliver something a little special — and a class gives you the technique to do it without the panic. You cook the whole menu start to finish, with a chef instructor beside you, so the dishes are less of a mystery by the time you leave.

It's also a rather lovely way to spend an afternoon. Four hours of chopping, sizzling, tasting and swapping stories with other people who also want their Christmas table to be memorable. Friends sign up together, couples make a date of it, and the odd brave solo cook arrives as a stranger and leaves with a new set of food-loving acquaintances. Who knows — you might discover a hidden talent for red cabbage.

And what you learn doesn't stay in class. A technique you pick up for a festive roast follows you home, into weeknight dinners and the next family gathering and the one after that.

What Christmas cooking classes are on at Palate Sensations?

This season's festive line-up includes four celebratory menus, each taught as a hands-on class at our studio in Biopolis. Each one takes a different approach to Christmas, so there's a good chance one of them sounds like your table.

  • Festive Class: Celebrate a Traditional Christmas — "traditional with a twist". The menu features flank steak, red cabbage and pecan cupcakes, so it's familiar enough to feel like Christmas and different enough to feel fresh.
  • Festive Class: Celebrate a White Christmas — a sumptuous celebration meal for anyone who wants a polished, snowy-white sort of festive dinner.
  • Festive Class: Christmas in the Tropics — a Christmas made for a country where the only snow is on the greeting cards. It's aimed at making this year's celebrations unforgettable.
  • Festive Class: Celebrate a Vegan Christmas — a plant-based festive menu with a creamy mushroom soup, a lentil stuffed pumpkin and a chocolate log cake.

There are also baking-led festive sessions, including a Christmas vegan orange log cake and a vegan chocolate Christmas baking class that makes double chocolate panettone and chocolate crinkle cookies. Dates and availability are updated on the live class listing as the season fills.

Which Christmas class is right for you?

The simplest way to choose is to start with the table you imagine on the day. Think about who's coming and what would make them go quiet for a moment as they take the first bite.

  • You're hosting a classic family Christmas. The Traditional Christmas class is a good fit. You get the comfort of a familiar festive meal, with a twist to keep things interesting.
  • You want something elegant for a smaller gathering. The White Christmas class is built around a sumptuous meal, which makes it a natural pick for a dinner party.
  • You'd rather your Christmas felt like Singapore. Christmas in the Tropics speaks to cooks who want a celebration that suits the climate and the company.
  • Someone at your table eats plant-based. The Vegan Christmas class gives you a full festive menu, so you won't be left improvising a side dish at the last minute.
  • You love baking more than roasting. The vegan log cake and chocolate baking sessions are made for you.

Not sure? Send us a message and we'll help you pick. It's what we're here for.

Is there a vegan Christmas cooking class?

Yes. This season's line-up includes "Celebrate a Vegan Christmas", where you cook a luscious creamy mushroom soup, a lentil stuffed pumpkin and a chocolate log cake. There are also two vegan baking classes: a Christmas vegan orange log cake, described as guilt-free yet indulgent, and a vegan chocolate Christmas baking class for double chocolate panettone and chocolate crinkle cookies.

If you have specific dietary or allergy needs beyond what a class title says, please talk to us before you book, so we can tell you exactly what's possible for that session.

What happens in a festive class?

You'll spend the session cooking the menu yourself, with a chef instructor guiding each step and explaining the why behind it — not only the what. The festive classes are longer than a standard class, at around four hours, which leaves room to cook properly, and ask all the questions you've been saving up.

The studio is at Chromos #01-03, 10 Biopolis Road, Singapore 138670, within walking distance of Buona Vista MRT. If you're coming straight from work or a morning of shopping, that makes it a pleasantly easy trip.

One small tip: wear comfortable shoes. You'll be on your feet and enjoying it.

How do you book, and what should you know first?

You book online through the class listing. Choose the festive class and date that suits you, and reserve your spot. A few practical points are worth knowing before you do:

  • Hands-on classes need a minimum of four participants.
  • Bookings close 48 hours before the class date.
  • If a class doesn't reach its minimum, it may be cancelled — you'll be told by email 48 hours ahead, and you can choose a refund or a replacement class.

Dates are added and filled through the season, so booking early gives you the most choice. Cooking with little ones in tow this season? Our companion post on Christmas baking with kids covers the parent-and-child classes.
