When the school holidays arrive, the question every parent dreads follows right on schedule: "What do we do now?"

Screen time has its limits. Shopping centres get old. But a morning in a professional kitchen — sleeves rolled up, learning to make real food from scratch — that is something kids actually look forward to. And unlike most holiday activities, the skills they build in the kitchen stay with them long after the holidays end.

At Palate Sensations in Singapore, children and teenagers cook properly. Not in a passive, watch-the-chef demo. Hands on the dough, their own workstation, knife skills taught age-appropriately — the way real learning happens. Here is every kids cooking programme we run, who it is for, and how to get in touch.

Junior Chef Programme — Real Kitchen Skills, Real Confidence

The Junior Chef programme at Palate Sensations is designed for children who want to go beyond basic baking and actually learn to cook. Participants work through proper kitchen techniques — heat management, flavour building, knife handling done safely — in a structured, chef-instructor-led environment at our Biopolis culinary studio.

This is not a one-off craft activity. It is a progression. Children who work through the Junior Chef series finish knowing how to cook for themselves, not just how to follow a single recipe on a single afternoon.

Who it is for: Children aged 8 and above who want to develop real, transferable culinary skills in a professional kitchen environment.

What they learn: Fundamental cooking techniques across both savoury and sweet — skills that travel home with them and into everyday life.

Why Teenagers Should Learn to Cook Before They Leave Home

Here is something most parents only realise when it is too late: the moment a teenager moves into a university hostel, starts NS, or gets their first flat is the exact moment cooking skills matter every single day.

Teenagers who can only make instant noodles are at a real disadvantage — nutritionally, financially, and socially. Teenagers who can cook a proper meal from scratch have a life skill that pays off every week for the rest of their lives. It is one of the most practical things a parent can give a child before they leave home.

The Junior Chef series is one of the best investments a teenager can make during a school holiday. It is structured enough to teach real skills, hands-on enough to keep their attention, and finished with food they actually made and ate. More than one parent has told us their teenager came home from the programme and cooked dinner for the whole family that same week.

If your child is approaching JC, polytechnic, university, or NS — give them a school holiday that will actually travel with them.

School Holiday Cooking Bootcamp — More Than Just a Day Out

The School Holiday Cooking Bootcamp at Palate Sensations is a structured, multi-session programme that runs during Singapore school holiday periods. It is designed for children who want something more immersive than a single-day class — covering a wider range of techniques, cuisines, and kitchen skills built up across the programme.

By the end of the bootcamp, participants have cooked through a meaningful range of dishes and developed real kitchen confidence. It is the kind of school holiday activity that parents notice when their child starts cooking at home afterwards.

Who it is for: Children aged 8 to 15 who want to spend part of their school holiday learning something practical, engaging, and genuinely useful — not just filling time.

Location: 10 Biopolis Road, Chromos #01-03 — 5 minutes' walk from Buona Vista MRT (Circle Line, Exit D). Undercover parking available.

Dates: Bootcamp programmes are published seasonally ahead of each school holiday period. Contact us or check the page directly for upcoming dates.

Parent and Child Cooking Classes — Bond Over Something Delicious

Some of the best conversations happen when your hands are busy. Parent and child cooking classes at Palate Sensations give families exactly that: a shared activity where the focus is on cooking together, and the result is a meal you both made from scratch.

These classes are structured for adult-and-child participation. A professional chef instructor guides you both through the recipe. You are not watching a demo — you are both cooking, at your own workstation, together.

Who it is for: Parents, grandparents, or carers with children who want a hands-on activity that creates a real memory. Works beautifully for weekends, birthdays, or simply because cooking together is genuinely good fun.

What you make: A full dish, together, from ingredients to table, guided by a qualified chef instructor.

Kids Cooking Birthday Party — The Party They Will Actually Remember

Most birthday parties are high-effort and low-memory. A cooking party is different — the activity is the event, and what the children make together becomes the celebration meal.

At Palate Sensations, a kids cooking birthday party runs for two hours. The children pick one sweet dish and one savoury dish from a chef-curated menu, work through both with chef-instructor guidance, and then sit down together to eat what they made. The birthday child gets to feel like the star of their own kitchen — because they are.

What is included:

  • Professional chef instructor for the full session
  • All ingredients and use of all equipment
  • Apron for each child
  • Soft drinks and water throughout
  • A sit-down meal of everything the children cooked

Menu — choose one sweet and one savoury:

Sweet options include: cupcakes with frosting and decorations, fruit tarts with pastry cream, sugar cookies with royal icing, blueberry muffins, chewy gooey cookies, salted caramel s'more brownie bars, chocolate donuts, scones

Savoury options include: pizza with assorted toppings, fresh pasta with Bolognese, slider burgers with melted cheese, grilled kebabs with roasted vegetables, lasagna, Japanese bento box with chicken karaage, gnocchi with Bolognese, schnitzel with mushroom sauce

Optional add-ons to make it extra special: professional photographer, magician, ventriloquism show, birthday cake, personalised apron to keep, savoury canapé platters

Dietary: Halal ingredients available on request.

Practical details: Minimum 6 children. Safe children's playground directly opposite our studio for guests who finish early. Undercover parking on-site.

What Makes Palate Sensations the Right Choice for Your Child

The short answer: 18 years of running kids programmes, more than 2,800 parties and events, and over 53,000 satisfied participants across all our programmes.

The longer answer is the kitchen itself. Our Biopolis studio is a proper professional culinary space — 2,000 square feet, 10 self-contained workstations, professional-grade equipment — not a classroom set up to look like a kitchen. Children work at real workstations, with real ingredients, guided by chef instructors who know exactly how to make cooking both safe and genuinely exciting for kids.

Our chef instructors — Lynette Foo, Loreta Valdez, and Kogilan Kumarasamy — bring over 20 years of combined experience to every session. There is outdoor dining on-site and a safe children's playground directly opposite the studio.

We are at 10 Biopolis Road, Chromos #01-03 — 5 minutes' walk from Buona Vista MRT. Parking is available in the building.
